Brave New World
Today I received a call from a friend asking me if I had read "A Brave New World". Well coming from this friend it was a strange question, so I say "No, but Should I?" She then preceded to tell me that she is now reading it, because it is required reading at the high school. Her daughter came home from school telling her that they were having a huge discussion in one of their classes today about this book. Apparently a student had come in and asked who he needed to talk to, to take the book off the required reading list. At this point I'm worried because I really have no idea what this book is even about. Then she goes on to tell me that the student who went to the teacher was my son Brandon. Wow, I was shocked. I couldn't believe it when she told me this. Apparently this book talks about teen sex and drugs. How can this be required reading for high school students? I was so proud of Brandon for speaking up for his beliefs. And even prouder because it apparently caused a big stir that it was discussed in classes afterwards. When I came home from work I asked him about it. He told me it was a horrible book and I should never read it. How kind of him to try to protect me from this book. Kyle said the teacher pulled him aside and told him about the stir that Brandon started. WAY TO GO BRANDON!!

I am not even sure you want me posting on your blog. Not too sure you even care much for me.
But I have to post about this post. LOL. I am super proud of your son. I frequently think of our youth and my own kids. And with the way the world is going I hope and pray that my kids will have the kind of guts that your son did. TRUST ME....the books that are allowed in highschool are getting to be pretty bad.
I heard a sister in a ward in my hometown say that her daughter would get a 0 if she did not read a particular book. She chose to get the 0.
I am so happy Brandon stood up for what was right. I just told my 11 year old that with peer pressure you have to be strong and you have to stand up and speak out. I told him that there were probably others that felt the same way he did but maybe they were afraid to say anything. And when one can say it others may follow.
GOOD JOB on raising these boys. Doesn't it make you feel that you are doing good as a mom? I hope you are proud.
Good Job Brandon! That is a hard thing to do when everyone is doing it and thinking it is ok. Good Job Mom and Dad for your example and instilling truth in this young boys heart.
Lisa, of course I want you posting. Thanks for your comments, I really do appreciate them.
Okay, Brandon good job. Most important to me is that he recognizes it for what it is. That is what is most important. I agree that I would not want to waste my time with a book that I know is not worth my time. Ultimately we all get exposed in life to the things that we do not want to and that is what makes it possible to choose. So, again Brandon good job on recognizing filth and false ideas the directly contradict truth. Keep making the right stand on thing and you will be okay.
He is such a good boy! I really liked living next to you guys. Your boys were always so nice to my girls and I felt safe and good knowing you guys were on the other side of the wall! :)
